Officers Close August Killing In Springfield With Bust Of 25-Year-Old Man: Police

A 25-year-old man was arrested on Tuesday, Sept. 26, and charged with the killing of 29-year-old Emmanuel Hernandez-Garcia more than a month and a half ago, Springfield police said. 

Police were called to Hanock Street near the intersection of Union Street on Aug. 6 after Emmanuel Hernandez-Garcia was shot and killed.

Edgardo DeJesus-Vazquez is accused of killing Hernandez-Garcia on Aug. 6 near the intersection of Hancock and Union Streets, Springfield police said. It's unclear what led to the killing. 

Police were called to the area around 7:45 a.m. and found Hernandez-Garcia shot. Paramedics rushed him to Baystate Medical Center, where doctors pronounced him dead. 

Hampden County Sheriff's deputies arrested DeJesus-Vazquez on Tuesday at a home on the 100 block of Pine Street following an investigation by Springfield police detectives. 

He is charged with: 

  • Murder
  • Carrying a firearm without a license
  • Carrying a loaded firearm without a license
  • Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
